I had so much fun doing this little project. I was asked to use the wonderful edding porceleain brushpens which easily add permanent designs to your ceramics. A total of 15 colours are available and produce a fine to broad brush stroke.
Here is how to use them
- Before decorating, clean thoroughly in the dishwasher and use a detergent or denatured alcohol to remove fingerprints or traces of grease.
- As you decorate, make sure there are no unnecessary fingerprints underneath the ink as you apply it. Allow to dry for 15 minutes before heating in the oven at 160°C for 25 minutes and then to cool in the oven.
- Only use the brushpen for decorative purposes. Avoid decorating areas of the porcelain that are used for cutting, eating or drinking. For example, only decorate the rim of a plate or the outside of a mug.
- Daily cleaning: avoid friction, rubbing and scrubbing by positioning the item in the dishwasher so that it is not in contact with other items of crockery or cutlery.
I picked up some vintage plates and cups for a few pounds in a charity shop..... my drawing skills aren't amazing so I found designs I liked and printed them off in reverse. Once happy with the size of the images I cut out each design leaving plenty of space around the image. I then went over the printed lines with a pencil, turned the image over and placed it on the ceramic and rubbed the back of the print hard. Once done I removed the paper and you have a traced imaged on the ceramic that you can then drawer over with your edding pen.
After 15mins drying time I popped them in the oven. These plates were for decoration only so I didn't need to keep the design to the edge of the plate. With the cups I kept the designs on the outside
