Oh yes you can!!!! and it will still feel like leather. I picked these chairs up in a job lot at auction recently. There were 2 of them and I took a while to warm to them but knowing I could paint them I had an idea of what I wanted to do.
Fusion can be painted directly onto leather, vinyl and fabric so it was simple to prep these Just a good scrub clean and a light sand on the wooden parts.
I was in two minds about going dark or light but finally went for Sterling. Its a beautiful soft grey that pairs with anything!!
I wanted the studs and legs and leather to show a bit of their original colour when I sanded them so I rubbed some wax over then edges in places before painting. This acts as a resist and allows you to distress fusion easily. Its such a tough paint that if you leave it too long before distressing it can be really hard work! I left to to dry for 4 hours which is the recommended time although I have cheated and done it sooner in the past with no problems but better to be safe than sorry.
I applied the second coat and let it become touch dry then I sanded back the studs and the chair legs on the edges where I had applied the wax previously.
Next I felt it looked a little plain so i decided to add a grain sack stripe
I masked off the lines using blue painters table and painted using Fusion's Homestead Blue.
Once dry you can wax all over but the vinyl still felt really soft so I didn't feel it was necessary.

First the prep. This has wax all over it .... you can tell by sanding a little. If dust comes off easily you have no wax, if you sand and there is little or no dust and clogs of grime on the sandpaper you know you have wax. You can remove it using white spirit and wire wool or Colron Wax remover... just apply the remover with wire wool. Let it sit for a few mins till you see the wax begin to soften then wipe off with a clean rag. I usually do this twice all over to be sure. Let it dry then you can give a light sand and clean off the dust. Now you can paint!
Fusion Mineral Paint doesn't need a primer if you prep like this but I felt like this could be a bleeder (tannins coming from the wood and bleeding through your lovely paint finish causing blotches and patches...So I primed it with Zinsser BIN primer. This makes sure bleeding does not happen.
I did 3 coats of the little teapot after this and gently distressed the edges. Fusion gets tougher the longer you let it cure so distress as soon as you can after painting or you will need to work really hard getting that paint off!!! You can apply a layer of wax around the edges before hand to make distressing easier if you prefer...
Now for the transfer. I used the same method I posted Here
all finished and super cute
]]>Here is how to use them
I picked up some vintage plates and cups for a few pounds in a charity shop..... my drawing skills aren't amazing so I found designs I liked and printed them off in reverse. Once happy with the size of the images I cut out each design leaving plenty of space around the image. I then went over the printed lines with a pencil, turned the image over and placed it on the ceramic and rubbed the back of the print hard. Once done I removed the paper and you have a traced imaged on the ceramic that you can then drawer over with your edding pen.

I picked up this beautiful old cabinet from one of my vintage hunting grounds the other week. It was actually lovely and I was in two minds about painting it… sometimes things are fine as they are, but it was for me and was going to sit on top of a dark wood chest of drawers so I felt a contrast would be good. Inside the wood was worn to perfection and I removed the old curtain to reveal the lovely glass front. I’ve kept the fabric, it washed fine and I will use it on something else.. I never waste anything if possible !!
I wanted a Swedish Blue so I mixed up my own blend of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. The recipe was 2 scoops of Bergere, 1 scoop of Flow Blue and 3 scoops of Farmhouse White. I knew I wanted it to be chippy to show through some of that lovely wood patina so I simply wiped off the cobwebs with a damp cloth and painted away. I did one coat and as I was short on time that day, I left it overnight. When I came back to it in the morning the chipping had begun, yay!!
I did 2 more coats that day and it chipped like mad. Milk Paint chips when there is something on the surface of the piece that will act as a resist against the paint. Old wax finishes, oil or grease will usually result in chipping. Because you don’t always know what is on an old piece of furniture you often don’t know how milk paint will react. You can control things by doing some prep with a light sand and cleaning with Simple Green, then if you want chipping….but controlled chipping you can add your own wax in the places where you want the paint to resist. If you don’t want chipping add the bonding agent to each coat and you will get smooth coverage. For me though the thing I love the most is just painting it on and seeing what it does. In this case it chipped to perfection, it looks so authentically old!. I sanded all over with a very fine grit sanding sponge and went all over the edges too. I used Hemp oil to seal it. I could have used the Tough Coat if I wanted to preserve it as it is and for it to not chip any more, but I am happy to let it do its thing.

]]>Start by painting your piece however you like. In this case I took an old wheelback chair and painted it in 2 colours of Milk Paint I used Furniture Wax as the resist between the layers to give a 2 tone vintage feel to the piece. If your paint is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint or milk paint it will need sealing with 2 coats of clear lacquer before doing the transfer. If using Harmony Mineral Paint you can skip this step.
Here it is all painted and sanded smooth.
Next you need to size and print your image. You can also use magazine images or wrapping paper also works well. If printing your own, you should make the print on a laser printer. If you don't have one any print shop will do it for you. First of all get your image I the position you want it. Print it off the right way round and cut it out . Place it where you'd like it to appear on the piece. Use tape to mark the edges where you want to place it then remove this print. ( I do this as its hard to see if its straight or centred when its face down on the piece.) Next print the image again, this time in mirror form. Apply the image medium gel all over the area making sure you have covered the whole area and beyond where the image will go and also apply a coat to the printed side. Brush it out evenly so you know you have good coverage.
Place you print face down onto the Gel and use a brayer or soft cloth to flatten the image and make sure no air bubbles remain. Once you are happy its well adhered leave it to dry for 8-12 hours.
Once you are sure everything is dry get a cotton cloth and dampen it. Press it into the print until you can see the image underneath coming through .
Gently start rubbing the dampened paper with your finger or the cloth. Start gently and remove the top layer. Let it dry and repeat, you will need to keep doing this until no white remains. Don't worry if some of the image comes away in places this adds to the vintage feel of things.
Again leave it to dry then you can do 2 coats of varnish on top to seal it all in.
